Down Home Gem Introduces Dynamite Female Vocalist The Smokey Joe Show -- Little Buildings

Remember watching  O Brother  and thinking that old-timey music sure looked and sounded like a real good time? I get that same feeling listening to this CD, a fine front-room party band put on disc. From the first song, “Squeeze You Right Up,” which is near genius in its homeyness, bounce-around-the-room rhythm and playful lyrical hooks, the virtual show starts strong. The tempo changes slightly among the CD’s songs, but the party rolls on through the whole experience, and when it’s over, you just might want more. For me, that’s a rare experience with albums these days.

The songcraft by the Smokey Joe Show is seriously noteworthy, and although a little raw and rough around the edges—which, for some (like me) makes it just a tad more “real”—this disc can easily stand toe to toe with any of Alison Krauss and Union Station’s. I mean that.

The instrumentation on the album is top-notch, making it apparent that while this band is certainly having a fun time with their music, they are also an impressive group of professionals. Tom Rogers is a standout as one of the best harmonica players I’ve heard, bringing to mind more than a couple of times “Fingers” Taylor of the old Coral Reefer Band. And while the drums and bass may get overlooked in this format, they have an adequate, not quite understated presence that is appreciated more with multiple listens. Lonny Finley gets to show off occasionally on guitar, but also stands alongside, not out in front, of the rest of the band.

The vocals are split and shared by “Smokey” Joe himself and Chelsea Goodman. Their voices have very different character, but they complement each other well, and sound natural together, especially on the traditional sounding duet “Ooh Baby.” I prefer the female vocals here, but Joe Peoples’ voice is so unique and full of experience that it is also a joy to listen to. Both singers are slightly unpolished, but that makes them that much more endearing.

About those female vocals: This Chelsea Goodman is AMAZING! I was already blown away by her delivery on the first song, and then completely taken by the seductive and soulful, bluesy “Talk to Me Baby,” which is a real winner of a performance. And then I found out this girl is still just a teenager! Granted, she is in good company with this band, and has good material to work with, but her talent is truly extraordinary.

Smokey Joe Show Impresses at Country Showcase

The  Smokey Joe Show won the
Charlotte Music Awards’ Country Showcase. The event, which also included the fine talents of David Cody, Greg Griffin and David Lambert and the Carolina Rails, was held on Nov. 29 at  Puckett’s Farm Equipment  in the Derita community of Charlotte.

Hailing from Burnsville, N.C., the Smokey Joe Show describes their music as “homegrown original music.” It might be best described as a little blues, a little country, a little bluegrass and a whole lot of mountain. The band is fronted by “Smokey Joe” Peoples and 15-year-old Chelsea Goodman. Tom Rogers adds some outstanding contributions on harmonicas. The audience seemed to particularly enjoy the song “Ooh Baby.” That song and others performed at the show are on the band’s new CD, Little Buildings.

The Charlotte Music Awards partnered with Kat Love of KMAC Music Promotions to put on the Country Showcase. Roger Cullis, a local TV producer and music producer, emceed the event. The judges for the showcase were Julia Dixon, Kelly Gray, Fran MacLeran and Ricky Traywick. Brandon Rosenthal served as the stage manager.

The Charlotte Music Awards promotes all aspects of music in Charlotte and the Carolinas. The showcases are one of the group’s activities for enhancing the profile of the music scene in the Carolinas. They are hosted at different venues across a variety of genres, leading up to an annual Awards Ceremony, the first of which was held in September at Ovens Auditorium.

Supporters of the Charlotte Music Awards include Amps 11, Carolina Promoter, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, Consolidated Press, Creative Loafing, Digital Bliss, Extra Medium, Extravaganza Events, Flavor Fruit Entertainment, 4WARD Promotions, High Timberline Media, John St. Graphics, Leigh Rose Marketing, Media Evolved, Pyramid Printing, Shoeshine Boy Design, Starbucks Coffee, Succession Records, The Wadsworth House, WGWG and WSGE.

new Smokey Joe CD

LITTLE BUILDINGS  is now available !!

Well, it has been awhile since I have had much to say about things. Its about time.... I am getting quite exited about the upcoming release of the Smokey Joe Show's new album, "Little Buildings". We have over the last few months been working on a few tunes and the project is close to fruition " The bed room sessions" as I like to call them. You know its funny, but after you play a song about 100 times it starts to sound like music. Damb if this stuff ain't been played about 100 times. Fancy that. The date of the release is TBA but it is looking like some where between now and then. Well maybe mid fall of '07. Anyway, I just wanted to give every one a heads up and give the world some thing to look forward to besides the 2008 elections . Speaking of the elections I am all about voting every one of the bastards out, and put in some new blood. Across the board. Vote out the incumbent!!!!! What the hell, here are my picks. Ron Paul. He at least needs a look. A close look. ... RonPaul2008.com

The Smokey Joe Show  would like to say goodbye and Godspeed to our guitar player,  Lonny Finley, and welcome back into our fold our old friend
Howie Johnson from Hendersonville, NC. Howie has been down on the Gulf Coast for a while and has recently come back home. Yea, I'm Happy. Howie is one fine guitar player...MAN OH MAN !!!

Howie will be replacing Lonny who recently decided to leave the band, he has a lot of things going on in his life making it hard to travel and play music. We wish Lonny and his family the best in all they have going on...Brother, You Will Be Missed.
